In verse 10 of Matthew 13, it is related for us that the disciples came to Jesus after He had preached to the multitudes, and when they had a private audience with him, they asked Jesus a general question concerning parables. The question was in relation to the multitudes who had just been listening to Him. “Why do You speak to them in parables?” The implication of the question was, that since they didn’t understand what He was saying; how would they profit by it? And in response Jesus gives them 3 reasons why He spoke in this way. 1st - Jesus spoke in parables because understanding the kingdom and how to enter it is a gift of God. 2nd – Because more understanding will be given to you if you have the basic understanding revealed to you. And 3rd – Because the preaching of parables does fulfill God's purpose in relation to mercy and judgment for all that hear them. Let’s look at these reasons more closely and be praying in our spirit that we would with all meekness receive Christ's words.
