The covenant people of God are acting in a superstitious way. Samuel had nothing to do with this behavior and would not have approved of it. Bringing the ark of the covenant into war was wrong.
The Lord is working out His will and this reflects back to what God said to Samuel and Eli.
Note in verse 3, the elders are thinking the ark may save them. The elders had no right to make this decision and they ewnt to the two corrupt sons rather tahn to Eli.
We must worship God in the way He desires not according to our own desires or devices. What sayeth the Scriptures should be our rule.
Superstition has no place in our life. The sacraments are not magic charms as some might believe. They are to strengthen and assure us. Do we do thinks because of self rather than God? What is our motivation in a day of prayer? Is it to glorify God or do we superstitiously think it will bring about what we want?
Do we proclaim 'Thou art worthy' or 'Thou art useful.'?
