After Darkness, Light - as was the motto of Calvin's Geneva. Do not take the blessing of God's Word for granted. We should depend on God's word. The rarity of The Word and the failure of the ministry leads to darkness. Indeed, the situation is dark in our time but amidst the darkness comes a Word from God. We see this in this account of Samuel. God is raising up a prophet for the profit of His people.
Even the ability to hear the Word of God is a gift of God. Remember, starvation may not just come from lack of food; it may be but lack of appetite.
This night that we read of in this passage was a night like no other night. The lives of Eli, Hophni, Phineas, Samuel and David would all be changed.
There is a crisis in Israel. Eli is soon to depart and his sons do not know the Lord. But, the Lord has His plan and calls Samuel.
We, like Eli, must be resigned to the will of God. Whatever He ordains is right!
