Theme: Godly attitudes glorify God and result in being rewarded in the kingdom. In vv. 7-11, Jesus gives a parable when He notices the people's problem of seeking places of honor for themselves. The fruit of legalism is pride, and Jesus teaches a spiritual lesson here. In vv. 8-9, He instructs them how not to live, and in v. 10, He instructs them how to live--have an attitude of humility. This is done by remembering what Christ has done for us, and also by remembering Christ's own humility. In v. 11, Jesus assures reward. In application, we need to remember there will be a day of reckoning. In vv. 12-14, Jesus moves to speak to the host and teaches him who not to invite, followed by who to invite in v. 13. Jesus then teaches about the blessing that comes from this. We need to have an attitude of generosity. There is a day of repayment. For the people of God, it is easy to have the right theology but not the right attitudes. Attitudes of pride and greed have no place in our lives. We are to be people who are like Christ: compassionate, humble, generous, and hospitable. |
