We were challenged in the first message by the words of Christ in John 4:48-38 to understand the spiritual harvest that is all around us even now. It must have been a moving sight to see the multitudes streaming to Jesus from the village of Sychar after the woman He had met at Jacob's well left her waterpots and excitedly advertised that she had met the Messiah.
At this point lies a great danger – very rampant but very insidious. We may be periodically stirred about the harvest, but not changed for life! Why? We so easily lose heart (“faint”). We “grow weary in well doing” before the promised harvest takes place. The inspired Apostle addresses this all-too-prevalent tendency in his epistle to the Galatians, who on several fronts had made a promising start, but were now faltering.
How can we safeguard against losing heart? Let us heed the example of our Savior. “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds” (Heb. 12:2,3). We must take our eyes off of ourselves and off of others and fix them on Jesus. He sees, and knows, and will reward because He alone can give the harvest. The reaping will be both in this life and in the life to come (Rev. 14:13).
