In the land of Israel in Bible times, the harvest did not begin until after Passover (corresponding roughly to our mid-March). It extended into April. First there was the barley harvest, followed by the wheat harvest (Ruth 2:23). Both were finished by the Feast of Pentecost when the “first-fruits” of the harvest were carried to the Temple. Jesus used the occasion of His encounter with the woman of Samaria at Jacob's well to teach His disciples some profound lessons about the “harvest.” It can occur with the most unlikely people in the most unlikely place at the most unlikely time, so we must be ready to thrust in the sickle. The first requirement for being a fruitful reaper is to recognize the harvest around us. We must “lift up our eyes.”
Yes, the harvest is here and now if we could only see things through Jesus' eyes! All around us are people burdened with their sins and hungry for the truth. We won't win everybody, but if we keep going, with a burdened heart, sowing the pure and precious seed, “in due season” we will reap somebody! Are we ready to sow or reap? Do we need that second touch from God so that we will see men clearly? Is our focus on the whitened harvest fields?
