Why is the idea of a shepherd a common Bible idea of God and of Jesus? The answer is found in our nature as sheep, and God's nature as the Good Shepherd who continually calls, leads, protects, and nourishes his flock. In the ancient world, shepherds were not highly esteemed, but were important for their care for vital animals. In a similar way, Jesus came as the ultimate shepherd, yet, was not esteemed. But he led and condinutes to lead those who follow to the promised end of eternal life in the unending kingdom of God.
