Have you ever struggled with doubt? This is not something most of us feel comfortable admitting, but most of us struggle from time to time and some of us constantly battle uncertainty about our faith. Some of us struggle with questions we can’t answer – Why does God allow the bad things to happen (especially to me)? Sometimes we are grieved at our sins and failures – How can I be a Christian if I keep acting this way?
When John the Baptist was in prison he apparently struggled with doubt. He sent two of his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?” Apparently Jesus was not fulfilling John’s expectation that the Messiah would rapidly bring judgment and transformation to Israel. Also, John probably did not anticipate that the inauguration of Jesus’ kingdom would allow the Messianic forerunner to languish in prison awaiting execution.
If John and other biblical figures could stumble into doubt, so could we. We too face unexpected trials and unmet expectations in life. We become confused about what God is doing.
Jesus graciously gives John the answer which doubters need as he points John to His great works and reminds him of the nature of His ministry. We too can turn to Jesus with our doubts. In this sermon I give several practical things we can do to fight doubt.
