This week we come to a climactic miracle as Jesus compassionately raises the dead only begotten son of a widow. Like the healing of the centurion’s servant, this miracle is a reminder of the great works of the prophets of old (Elisha and Elijah – see 1 Kings 17:17-24, 2 Kings 4:18-37). This sign should have made it abundantly clear to the Jews that Jesus is the Messiah. It also is a picture of His work of giving life to those who are spiritually dead. Many of us have (spiritually) dead children. Only Jesus can give them life.
