Chapter Three is a lengthy chapter in Nehemiah but is vital as we now see the work actually taking place. We see how many names are listed. We may forget at times what is happening in the church or who is doing what. The Lord, however, records it all and knows who is involved. It is good to see that there were people from all diverse backgrounds who were prepared to help with menial tasks. Much of the labour in the church is not glamorous and there are lots of practical tasks that need doing.
There are many lessons for church life from the example of the people in Jerusalem. Everybody did what they could. Some could do more. Some could only do a little. But each played their part. People did not make excuses for not helping. They were motivated by recognising the value of the work they were doing and they overcame discouragement. There is much discipline they showed which we can learn from today
