This marvelous text follows the Lord's sarcastic statement about idolatry. Having warned His people about its inherent danger, He seeks to reassure them about His faithfulness to them. He does so by reminding them about His work of redemption on their behalf. Under this heading I highlight the dual themes of the Christian's ability to forget truth, and his anti-doctrine mentality. These are major problems for the typical Christian. And then the Lord reveals His sovereign choice about the instruments He employs to accomplish His purposes. Here He affirms His sovereign choice of Cyrus, the pagan king, and gives a description of how He plans to use him. The text closes with a reiteration of divine sovereignty. Interesting, the apostle Paul quotes from this very text to support the doctrine of the absolute sovereignty of God in salvation. I conclude the sermon with an application to Christians about the glorious work of God for His people. As the Lord of history He is working all things for the sake of His elect, the body.
