We come now to another chapter in which the theme of idolatry is developed. Once again we see the Lord's sarcastic remarks about the absolute absurdity of idolatry. I open this sermon with a brief account about the underlying reason for idolatry. It is rooted I man's fall but that is coupled with his ongoing inclination to worship. And thus the stage is set for idolatry to dominate his life. I then expound the text with the Lord's word to His people; His word about Himself; and then His word about idolatry. It is because of what His people are, and because of who God is, that makes idolatry so absurd and such an abomination in His sight. The thrust of the sermon is the exposure of idolatry. It is always an abomination to God, and it is unworthy of human beings who are created in the image of God. But far worse, it is absolutely absurd for the people of God to fall into idolatry. Unfortunately, this happened with Israel and Judah, and was one of the primary reasons for God's judgment upon them. I close with three emphatic statements summarizing the nature of idolatry. May God be pleased to bless the preaching of His word.
