In this series on 'The Mission of God' it is imperative that we consider the Spirit's role in God's mission. The Spirit is one with the Father and the Son and makes the plan and purpose of God real to us so that we are not uninvolved bystanders but wonderfully caught up in the love action of God's kingdom. The importance of the Spirit in joining us to God's mission cannot be overstated. If we leave the Spirit out of our consideration we either become disinterested in what God is doing because it is too grand and too remote to be of relevance to us or we forge ahead in our own strength falsely believing that we are expected to accomplish God's mission as if we are the key players and God is the spectator. The reality that is ours is that the Spirit takes the things that are central to God's mission and unites them to our innermost being so they shape who we are and what we are about. To realize that the Spirit is the One who gives us life and is constantly making God's word effective in our lives will change the way we see ourselves, the world and our place in the kingdom of God.
