Then we open the first Beatitude - "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" and understand the blessing or happiness that God bestows upon those who are of a broken and contrite spirit and find all their happiness in Christ, who opens heaven to them. Christ promises that those who embrace a poverty of spirit will find everlasting happiness in Him.
