James is the 59th book of the Bible and we certainly know by the time we come to this remarkable book that is the will of God to walk and live in divine strength. And we are certainly obligated to fulfill the royal law liberty. Christians are not lawless people: quite the opposite. This passage can be explained under three headings: I. Christians are obligated to fulfill the royal law (Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself). II. The character of God motivates us to fulfill the royal law (for HE THAT SAID...). III. God's children find true freedom in fulfilling the royal law "of liberty". When the subject of liberty comes up it is very approptriate to ask the question, "What does it mean to be ourselves?". Marxism has the wrong answer as does hinduism, Islam, and secularism. The Bible has the answer: Men and women, boys and girls are made in the image of God. Our true freedom depends on discovering how we can give expression to our true nature. James answers this crucial question by this expression: "the perfect law of liberty." That is how you give expression to your true nature. This is the opposite of much contemporary thinking! The world's version of freedom is so often palpable BONDAGE. O that thou had hearkened to my COMMANDMENTS! Then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea. Luke 19:14 succinctly explains why people refuse Christ's salvation.
