Two young DRC refugees sit in the home of an American missionary in South Africa. In a light moment they are on a roll, regaling the missionary with tales they found hilarious. As much as the American missionary wanted to laugh with them, all he could do was laugh at them laughing. He simply didn't see the humour in what they were saying. It cannot be denied that people are radically different. While appreciating that people are very different, Scripture shows how we can have unity in the church.
For one, Scripture reminds us that all true believers have a powerful motivation to pursue unity. We have a high calling.
Also, we don't pursue unity by using a technique gimmick, but by growing in Christian character, motivated by seeing the moral glory of Christ. This kind of unity can never be reduced to the absurdity of "just being nice".
Moreover, unity stems from the fact that weh God saves a believer, he actually joins that person to Christ and to other believers in the same way that a physical body is joined together. The reason believers should act as if they are connected to other members of the church is because they are connected to other members of the church.
God is totally for the other believer you are finding fault with; what a sobering thought!
Sometimes we content ourselves with looking forward to unity in glory. That will certainly be wonderful. Yet that longing should not hinder us from enjoying the start of this unity right now!
