The allegiance and respect shown to the Babylonian government had its limits for three Hebrew men who were civil rulers in Babylon. These limits were severely tested when the three men were required to show respect for Babylonian unity under the gods. The sermon seeks to show that Nebuchadnezzar's vision of religion and unity are not unique to him, and that the Christian today cannot compromise the exclusiveness of Christianity in an era of accommodation and unity by showing respect for a lowest-common-denominator religion. The sermon also illustrates the validity of the 2nd Commandment not only in its prohibition of venerating images, but also in prohibiting any worship invented by men.
