RISE, AND MEASURE THE TEMPLE: John has seen and heard many things and has now become a participant. This temple is the rebuilt temple of Daniel's Seventieth Week in which Satan will appear in human form and demand worship (2 Thessalonians 2:4). The Bible refers to that incident as the Abomination of Desolation (Daniel 9:2; Matthew 24:15). He will come in his name and not the name of the one and only true God (John 5:43). This is not the temple mentioned in Revelation 11:19 in Heaven, nor the Millennial temple described in Ezekiel chapters 40-48. History records the construction of three temples in Jerusalem: • Solomon's temple described in First Kings chapter 8, which Nebuchadnezzar destroyed in 583 BC with details given in Second Kings chapters 24-25. • Zerubbabel's temple, described in Ezra chapter 3, was destroyed by Antiochus Epiphanes in 168 BC. • Herod's temple is referred to by the Lord in John 2:20 and was destroyed by Titus and the Roman army in AD 70.
