Paul gave them the gospel, which was well received. Now he wanted to make sure that they were growing spiritually (sanctification). Timothy would leave at a later time to minister to them after the verdict of Paul’s trial had been given. Epaphroditus would leave immediately to deliver the letter (v.2:23). Timothy would observe their conduct and report back to Paul. Paul being aware that his release or death could come at any time expected good news regarding their spiritual condition through his emissary Timothy. Paul needed Timothy for support during this time of uncertainty over his death or life. He was willing to do without his support to have the Philippians welfare well attended.
