We understand that the Bible teaches us not to gossip or slander. In this portion of Pilgrim's Progress however, we see Christian sharing negative information with Faithful about Mr. Talkative. Was Christian gossiping about Mr. Talkative and slandering him?
This raises the critical issue; when is it wrong to share negative information about other people, and when is it right? Does Scripture command Christians to refrain entirely from sharing negative information, or does it give us guidelines as to when negative information about other people should be shared?
This of course brings up another complication. When a person is spoken against negatively, there are always both speakers and listeners involved. If I want to remain pure in this area of my life, then I must also ask the question, "When is it right for me to LISTEN to negative information about other people and when is it not right?" Does Scripture command me to avoid listening to any negative report about someone else or are there times when it is appropriate to listen to, and act upon negative information shared about others.
May the Lord bless you as you consider the issue of gossip and slander more clearly, and as you honour Him with your speech and listening.
