He had spoken so well; his manner had been so convincing; Faithful had been so overjoyed to find such an admirable companion. Yet now, this shining companion has become a little tarnished. Something is gravely wrong. He is like the man who has inhaled laughing gas while in the throes of death so that while he crashes into eternal misery, he laughs uncontrollably. Talkative is such a man. After discussing with Christian what they should do with him, Faithful touches Talkative in a most tender spot in his life. He exposes the fact that while Talkative was such a silver tongue, he was in fact spiritually dead, and he would not be welcomed at the Celestial City where Christian and Faithful were going. If their destination was not the same, how could they enjoy the journey together? Sadly, rather than listening to these words of wisdom, Talkative chooses to take offense at Faithful's presentation of truth and parts company with an unpleasant attitude. The deceiver had been exposed. Possibly one of the most important issues uncovered in this message is this; Is it unloving to speak the truth to a person even if that speaking will separate close friends? In other words, is the keeping of peace between friends more important that preserving truth?
