‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the greatest and first commandment. This love is what we have been made for as human beings—but is this what we do? Loving God could not be further from our minds much of the time. The Bible says we have become ‘haters of God'—because God's agenda crosses the agenda we have set for ourselves. So how can we love God? The truth is: love is not from us; love is from God. It always has been. That love comes to us in Jesus, even while we are still sinners. God does something to us: atonement is made for our sins, faith and hope spring up, God's love is poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. We love the Lord! And in the love that is given to us, we give love out to others.
