One of the most difficult doctrines to understand is God's sovereignty. God's will extends to the falling of sparrows to the ground, so also God's will extends to the hairs of your head. God reckons everything about His people to be so precious. When Israel left Egypt, Moses said to Pharaoh "not a hoof shall be left behind." Christ knows exactly what he has purchased with his blood down to the minute detail of who we are. Nothing of us will be left in the grave. God's sovereignty, His will, is not a purposeless governing of creation. He has a purpose to it. God does all things for His own glory. God is all-powerful. The fact that God is sovereign and all powerful is reason sufficient to trust him. Unbelief is a mark against God's power and sovereignty. Every sin will be punished with God's infinite wrath. God's sovereignty means we will lack nothing that we need. He will provide. In Joshua's battle, God wasn't only providing for their victory, he was providing for their faith as well. We need His wisdom. We need His worldview. If God is sovereign, and if God is moving all things for His own glory, then the faithful servant will have God's aim as his own. Joshua obeyed God, not for his own glory, but for God's glory. Should we do any less? God saves His people so that He will be gloried by His mercy.
