There are few portions of Scripture as precious to the believer as Jesus' high-priestly prayer recorded in John 17, in which He intercedes for His own. The Lord's Supper was over, as was the life's work Jesus had been given to accomplish, with the great exception of the ultimate sacrifice for His sheep. But before He laid down His life, Jesus prayed for His flock. Here we are permitted to enter the Holy of Holies with our great High Priest, and hear Him pour out His heart for His people. Here Jesus says very plainly: 'Gorify your Son...as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him.' All Christians can say 'Amen' to Jesus having authority over all flesh, but not all Christians will affirm that Jesus gives eternal life to as many as God has given Him. This passage makes it clear that Christ did not die for Goliath in the same sense in which He died for David, nor for Pharaoh in the same sense in which He died for Moses. There is solid food here. Take and eat.
