Polycarp, Justin Martyr, Perpetua, John Hus, William Tyndale, Patrick Hamilton, George Wishart, Margaret Wilson. The history of the church is filled with the stories of faithful martyrs who loved their Savior more than life itself. Why? These and so many like them are a living testament to the truth of Jesus' words: "Behold, I send you out as sheep among wolves." We preach the gospel to a world that is hostile to it and to us, and Jesus would have us to realistically face what the labor of doing good to men's souls through the gospel will cost us. Nevertheless among those wolves are chosen vessels of God like Saul who consented to Stephen's death, men whom God's grace would later make into instruments of righteousness. But while the price of doing good to souls is high, is it not worth it? And indeed, Jesus has promised that as we labor in a hostile world He will go with us, and indeed He has gone before us as the Martyr of martyrs. This message is a call to not be ashamed of the gospel, and to be bold as we proclaim it in love, for our God is ever with us!
