In Christ, all believers are one, just as biological family members are one; each is related to the other by blood, not choice, nor chance. Jesus’ prayer for His disciples’ unity is fulfilled each time a sinner repents, trusts in Christ’s blood shed on his behalf, and is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. All who are so born again are one in Christ! But here’s the thing: in God’s family, as in biological families, the experience of oneness is varied, and relative to each member’s mindset and participation. Our part is not to create oneness – that’s a gift from God; our privilege and duty is to enjoy, maintain and express the oneness that already is ours in Christ. This Sunday, we’ll be refreshed, and maybe even challenged a bit, as we resume our study of Jesus’ prayer for His disciples with “Embracing unity in Christ.”
