1) We are reminded that God relates to His people by way of a covenant. All of us are in a covenant relationship with God.
Whether or not we are member of the covenant of Grace, we are in a covenant relationship with God. So long as we are baptised, whether young or old, we are in a covenant relationship with God.
2) We are reminded that that at the core of God’s covenant relationship with his people is always the Covenant of Grace. This is why before Christ came, all the subordinate, external covenant were ratified with blood.
The blood of the subordinate covenants always point to the blood of the everlasting covenant, even the covenant of grace.
Those who are the elect of God are related to God under the covenant of grace, but we shall have to live and conduct ourselves according to our outward covenant responsibilities.
Because of the close relationship between the covenant of grace and the outward covenant, none who would submit to the Lord according to the outward covenant can expect salvation ordinarily.
3) We see that it is essential for God’s people to respond with covenant obedience to the LORD. We are not saved by works! Since the Fall, God’s people are never saved by works whether we live under the Old Covenant or under the New Covenant. All our righteousness are filthy rags in the sight of God. Our salvation will always be by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
