The focus of our study shifts from the anatomy of rebellion to the path of rebellion.
During the closing years of the era of the Judges, a sinful inclination festered in the hearts of God's people, they wanted an earthly king. Thus, toward the end of Samuel's life, this sinful passion was born. God's people, in the name of “justice,” approached Samuel and requested a king to rule them. In essence they were casting off the reign and rule of God for the temporal security that an earthly king might supply.
Amazingly, God told Samuel to give the people exactly what they wanted, but first he was to sternly warn them. Our text now represents a shift from theory to reality. The people stopped longing for a king to actually taking steps toward getting a king.
And thus I have titled the section, “The Path to Rebellion.”
