In the old Authorised Version, Proverbs 29:18 says, "Where there is no vision the people perish." More recent translations qualify this appropriately saying, "Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint." Humanity needs a vision or hope for the future– a road map. Not only to create a pathway out of the death and disease from the current virus, but because without a vision for the future people lose hope– they run wild, casting off restraint and doing their own thing. And, in the end, they will perish!
In the many oracles of judgment and redemption in Isaiah 13-27 the Lord gives his people such a vision. A road map of what's to come in both the near and distant future. And this is part of his greater, eternal plan of redemption to brings all things together in Christ. Without this vision, we have no sure, eternal hope– and we will perish. But with it, there can be life and joy and patient endurance as we wait eagerly for his blessed appearing.
