John contrasts two healings: the healing of the nobleman's son (ending chapter 4) and the healing of a paralytic (opening chapter 5). One sign points to Messiah, who is received by faith, resulting in salvation. The other sign confronts the hypocritical Pharisees with their draconian Sabbath rules. The man who is healed is not saved, but betrays Jesus to the Jews. The confrontation is addressed in remainder of the chapter. Jesus' Messianic authority is established by this sign at the pool of Bethesda. John used the events addressed to reveal true faith and willful spiritual blindness.
