In this passage Nicodemus is shown his great need. Jesus teaches him that his circumcision is not sufficient, but that he must to be born again. It is not enough to be baptized either, as baptism does not cleanse us from our sin. Rather, baptism testifies of our need to be cleansed in Christ's blood. Furthermore, baptism not only testifies of our need for the rebirth, but also testifies of our great privilege in that we may indeed be born again. Finally, baptism testifies of our great responsibility.
