Jesus is The King Part 4: God Displays Jesus of Nazareth as The King of The Jews
God gloriously displays Jesus of Nazareth as the King of the Jews! He brings Jesus “outside the camp” for execution (16-18) The soldiers take Jesus outside the city to Golgotha (16b-17) Jesus carries His own cross (17; Gen 22:6—Isaac picture) They crucify Him “outside the camp” (18) Identification with Jewish executions (Lev 24:23) Identification w/ Day of Atonement sin off (Lev 16:27) Identification with the curse (Deut 21:23; Gal 3:13) Identification with transgressors (18; Is 53:12) He publicly declares Jesus as the King of the Jews (19-22) Pilate's inscription: “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews” (19-20) Prominently displayed (19-20) Published in three languages (Aramaic, Latin, and Greek) Jewish objection to Jesus' kingship (21) Pilate's resolute refusal to change (22) He fulfills His prophecy of the acquisition of Jesus' clothes (23-24) Division of His garments (23) Casting lots for gambling for His clothing (19:24; Ps 22:18) The great exchange—Jesus was stripped so that we might be clothed (2 Cor 5:21) He then brings people to repentance and faith in the King!
