Having heard of God's purpose in creation and that he is always on mission, we turn this week to 'Christ and the Mission of God'. In particular we will hear that one aspect of the mission of God is to have his Son rule over every nation, power and authority– in fact, to rule his entire Kingdom. As his Christ, the Anointed One, Jesus is this Son-King, the fulfilment of God's promise of an eternal kingdom to David. As we look around us, to the world, as well as in our own lives and homes, it may not seem that Christ is reigning or ruling at all. Or, if he is, there still seems to be much that is out of control, as the writer of Hebrews acknowledges, "At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him." But the writer does not finish there! We are not to look down or around, but 'up', in faith, to Jesus, "crowned with glory and honour because of the suffering of death." We have a king! And he lives and reigns at the right hand of the Father! Blessed are all who take refuge in him. |
