In chapter 5, Luke introduces the couple, Ananias and Sapphira, who lied to the apostles of their gift of the proceeds of a sale of property. Because they "lied to the Holy Spirit", God chose to make an example of them by putting them to death--a grave consequence for their sin, but that demonstrated the power the Spirit of God was displaying through the apostles.
This did not go unnoticed by the religious leadership in jerusalem who had both Peter and John jailed in their zeal to rid the city of this Messianic movement. However, as Psalms 2 says, "He who sits in the heavens laughs" at those who think they are in authority. The evening of their arrest, n angel of the Lord breaks them out and they are found preaching the next day at the Temple.
We look at the many miracles involving the apostles as well as the wise counsel of Gamaliel. We also look at the subject of healing, and whether the Holy Spirit is working miraculously today.
