AFTER THESE THINGS: The wording as it relates to timing is critical to recognize and understand. John is giving a chronological expression of how the revelation was given to John. The material found in Revelation chapter 7 was revealed to him between the sixth and seventh seals but that does not guarantee that the events will occur between the opening of the two seals. FOUR ANGELS: These angels have power over the winds. Another of the angels has "power over fire" (Revelation 14:18), and yet another angel is referred to as the "angel of the waters" (Revelation 16:4-5). Those worshipping the god of these elements are worshipping angels. FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH: Some scoff at the verse, questioning its reference to the earth's four corners. Since the planet is round, critics equate the Bible to archaic literature still holding to the flat earth mentality. However, National Geographic wrote a story many years ago that highlighted four places on the earth where the crust of the Earth rises higher than the rest of the planet. Perhaps these are the four corners mentioned in this text. If not, it is within reason to believe the four designated points are the north, south, east, and west. Regardless, the expression refers to the entire earth. FROM THE EAST: The direction "from the east" has both good and bad references; one of the negative ones concerns the great horde coming from the "east" to seek Jerusalem's destruction.
