Dearly beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, Psalm 1 describes the blessed man. So does Psalm 119. Jesus describes the blessed man in Matthew 5. But those are not the only Beatitudes in Scripture. Here in Proverbs 3 we see another beatitude — a blessing pronounced on the man who finds wisdom. The poor in spirit are blessed. Those who delight in and seek God’s law are blessed. And so is the wise man. In fact, our text informs us, wisdom is not only a blessing to men, but an agent for God as well. Our Father works through wisdom in creation and providence. And finally, the text tells us, wisdom provides protection for sons. Here’s where the lone exhortation of our text comes in. Don’t let wisdom out of your sight. Guard this precious gift of God that’s summed up in the words of Proverbs and in the person of Jesus Christ. Why should you listen to this sermon? Listen if you care about the good life. Listen if you care about creation and providence. Listen if you care about safety. The bottom line here is that wisdom is a blessing to God and man alike, and so you must carefully guard it!
