There are many things we can't predict about the future of this church. But there is one thing we can predict. It is likely that within the next few years, some will wander from the faith and maybe even fall away. James starts with this sad reality. Some will lie, some will give in to sin, and others will fall in love with the world. The Christian faith will no longer appear as attractive to them. But even here there is hope. Biblical church members will go after them. In fact, James presupposes this. Some cautions are also in order. Not every Christian has the same degree of responsibility to every other Christian. Biblical church members care for those who are closest to them and allow other biblical church members to go after those who are closest to them. Moreover, some Christians become so consumed with other Christians' sin that they exhaust themselves. A good way to know whether your concern for others is appropriate or not is to ask whether your concern over the sin of another Christian matches your concern over your own sin. If not, there may be some other mechanism at work in your concern for others. It might not be entirely appropriate. It is an encouraging fact that Christians going after other Christians is a means God sometimes uses more effectively than He uses the pastor to go after straying Christians. Dramatic stories of restoration after dreadful sin give the church hope.
