In light of such blood, sweat, and tears, we are often like the disciples that we will discover today. While walking with God, they were still concerned about their own position in the coming kingdom. This selfish ambition among God’s people will lead to division. It did then, and it will today. The pride of our hearts has a slither to it as it lurks in the grass of our thoughts ready to place oneself first. It is the cockroach that likes to work in the dark, but likes to run with the light of gospel truth shines on it. It is dangerous. It is a desire for first place. It is the desire to be served. It promotes anger when people stand in your way, and it creates conflict rather than love and peace. This morning, let us engage in the passage before us. I want you to pay close attention to what Jesus says and is thinking about while at the same time listening to the disciple’s thoughts and words. There is a huge contrast between the two. Jesus has come to serve while the disciples are wondering how they could get into powerful positions in order to be served. What kind of church would this be if everyone has the right mentality of being servants? Our title will be Jesus Christ: The Servant. We will consider 1) Portrait of the Suffering Servant 2) Promotion of Self 3) Perfect Example of Service
