In this expository sermon Dr. Felker shares Paul's concern to prevent the spread of false doctrine in the church. We are commanded to do so because false doctrine generates strike and fails to produce what the true gospel produces: love, a pure heart, and a good conscience. Then he gives some examples of false doctrine to avoid. In Paul's day it was transmitted through myths and genealogical material, such as in the apocryphal books and later in the book of Mormon. Finally, he shares how to spot a false teacher. They depart from the sound doctrine of Scripture and they seek to be teachers and preachers out of personal ambition for the benefits the office confers: respect, admiration, and prosperity. Though they may speak confidently, Paul says they often don't even understand what they are saying (because they are not called the gifted by God and are just parroting others).
