Revelation Lesson #054 FOUR AND TWENTY ELDERS: In the Old Testament, twenty-four elders were chosen to care for the temple (1 Chronicles 24:1-8). They were all sons of Aaron and picked through the "casting of lots" (1 Chronicles 24:5). Hebrews tells us that earthly priests were a shadow of heavenly things (Hebrews 8:1–5). See also Psalm 107:32 and Hebrews 11:2. So the twenty-four could consist of Jews only or be divided into two groups of twelve (Jews and Gentiles). Revelation 5:8-9 Those singing could be only the twenty-four elders mentioned or be part of the saints mentioned in verses 8-9. Twelve is used with the Jews and the Gentiles, so group could be a combined twenty-four with twelve from each. Deuteronomy 32:8 The Gentile divisions "according to the number of the children of Israel" match the number of the children of Israel—twelve. These twenty-four elders around the throne could be the twelve tribes of Israel combined with the twelve representatives from the division of the nations. Exodus 19:6,16 SEVEN SPIRITS OF GOD: Revelation 1:4 identified these seven spirits as the seven attributes or manifestations of God's Spirit. In this text, the seven spirits appear as seven lamps.
