God is not mentioned as Moses writes of Adam and Eve's fall from grace into sin. This is curious. We get the impression that God has left for the moment; that He is out of the garden, tending to other things. While God is "gone", the creatures, those in charge, misbehave. The watchful eye of God is not perceived to be present, and disobedience rears its ugly head. This suggests two things. First, bad things happen as we are separated from God. Or as we perceive that we are separated from God. Our minds wander off. We think that He is not watching. We may think that He is not caring. Secondly, we tend to forget that Adam was the one given the job of watching, of keeping, of keeping a watchful eye out for the garden, including Eve. That being watchful had been assigned to Adam. Even as Adam and Eve might have perceived that God had left them (even though He had not), that Adam was nonetheless charged with being watchful. Both had this job regarding their own hearts, but Adam, as the head, had this task assigned more particularly. Even as God was perceived as having walked out for a moment, these were not free to submit to their own wills, but to keep guarding and keeping their hearts inclined toward the will of Him who had made them. And so do all those who call Christ Lord and Savior. This passage today calls us to turn to God and expose our sins to the only One who can provide a true cover and healing.
