You are to obey God. In this case, it is to love your neighbor as yourself. It is the summary of every law that there is. The bible refuses to give you steps that you can take to make this happen. And it refuses to moralize you into obedience. Instead, God simply trusts that you will believe him and his promises. He knows that his gospel will be enough to overpower your sin and the temptations that beset you. He knows that one day, you will have no more sin or darkness in your heart. And he wants you to focus all of your energy on this truth, for it is a truth that will keep you upright in dark times. Or rather (or both), he is making it plain in his word that He is going to set all of your energy on this truth.
Beloved, the hour for you to awaken from your sin is upon you. You must no longer behave as you did when you were in the darkness. You cannot sin anymore because the Bright Morning Star is now shining his light into your dark heart. The night is almost gone.
