Gideon named the son of his concubine "Abimelech" a name that, in Hebrew, means "My father is king." Abimelech became king over Israel for a disastrous 3 year period. The story shows how God can use the evil deeds of men sovereignly to accomplish His purposes. These events in Judges 9 are preserved to give comfort to all of God's people by showing them that He will never allow evil to destroy His chosen people. Parallels are drawn from Judges 9 to 1 Samuel 8 and to Luke 2 in this historic and prophetic account in Judges 9.
