In chapter 42 of Isaiah's prophecy we are introduced to this mysterious figure that is identified as “The Servant of the Lord.” In the first two sermons from this chapter I opened up the Servant's identity and then His mission. In this final sermon I will develop Isaiah's contrast between the true SERVANT, who is the Messiah, and the unfaithful servant, who is Israel/Judah. However, sandwiched between the two is a summons to the people of God that solicits their praise to Jehovah. The main emphasis, however, are the reasons given for praising Him. The remainder of the chapter addresses the spiritual blindness of Israel/Judah, and the reasons for it. Spiritual blindness is truly a great tragedy, but what is even worse is the declension that accompanies it. And if a healing is not forthcoming, then divine judgment is the only alternative. Unfortunately, the Old Covenant people of God are a perpetual example of just such a failure. In the conclusion I give advice on how to prevent this deadly disease, for it can be prevented. However, if it does indeed strike us, the steps to a cure are precisely the same as the prevention.
