In chapter 42 of Isaiah's prophecy we are introduced to this mysterious figure that is identified as “The Servant of the Lord.” In fact, this is the first of four so-called “Servant Songs” in the book of Isaiah. These are a foretelling of the Servant of God, this one who will accomplish the will of God. Contrary to what some assert, this is not a reference to the nation Israel as a whole, but rather to the Messiah of God. This is the deliverer that was promised back in Genesis (3:15), the one whom God would send to undo the ruin caused by man's tragic fall. The whole Bible is the story of redemption, or the outworking of God's promise to bring man and the creation itself back into harmony with Himself. In the last sermon I developed what Isaiah revealed by way of his introduction of the Servant. In this sermon I will develop what he says about His mission in the world. It was indeed a “mission impossible,” and yet it became a “mission accomplished” because God was with Him, and guaranteed His success. But here we shall see the tactics of His mission, or the manner in which He would go about performing His mighty work.
