Psalm 19 deals with both general and special revelation. It tells how God discloses truth about Himself through His creation and through His Word. The two closely parallel each other, but God reveals His glory more fully in His Word than in all Creation. Creation reveals “God's eternal power and godhead” (Rom. 1:20). It can render men “without excuse.” But only the special revelation of Scripture will inform a man of what God requires for salvation and for success in life. Thus, God has exalted His written revelation above everything – even His Name (Ps. 138:2)!
In verses 7 through 14, David by inspiration of God gives six names for Scripture, six characteristics of Scripture, and six effects (benefits) of Scripture. We have considered the first one – “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul.” The Bible is God's manual for man's life. It is perfect and complete – all that the Christian needs “for life and godliness.” It transforms the sinner, restores the backslider, and revives the believer.
We live in a world that constantly bombards us with lies, deception, and soul-damning errors. Man is fallen, and therefore fallible. Only the knowledge of the truth can liberate us (John 8:32). “Thy word is truth” (John 17:17). Thank God that His Word is trustworthy. Everything else is unreliable.
