After Paul preached powerfully about Jesus in the synagogue at Pisidian Antioch, the Jewish people there begged Paul and Barnabus to return the next Sabbath to preach again. Over the course of the week, word got out about these dynamic men of God. On the following Sabbath, almost everyone, Jew and non-Jew (Gentiles) alike, came to hear what Paul and Barnabus had to say. The Jewish leadership, jealous of their influence, sought to contradict the message. However, this did not dissuade Paul. Indeed he told them, "The Word of God must be spoken...first to you [the Jewish people]; but since you repudiate it, we turn to the Gentiles." (v46). This is the first time Paul and Barnabus spoke first to a Jewish audience and then shared the same message to a non-Jewish audience with resounding results. (See Romans 1.16; John 1.11-12; 1 John 3.23; Isaiah 49.6) "When the Gentiles heard the Word, they rejoiced and glorified the Word of the Lord and the Word was spread throughout the region." (v48-49). Paul also introduces the importance of the grace of God in his individual ministry.
