We spoke last Sunday about memory as the first step to avoiding apostasy. You need to remember what it has already cost you and those you love to be faithful to Christ. And then, in the power of that memory, you need to remain faithful. Faithfulness is not going to be easy. It's going to require endurance. That's the second key to avoiding apostasy, as our author says in this passage. You don't want to fall away or shrink back. You don't want to revert to Judaism, or to American paganism, or to any other religion that rejects the good news about Jesus. You especially want to endure because Jesus is coming back soon. It's only a little while until you will see Him again. Imagine dropping out of the race after fifteen laps with only half a lap to go. That would be stupid. That may also be your approximate position in the race to heaven. Imagine stopping on the edge of Gillette and renting a hotel room after 16 hours in the car. You are ten minutes from home. Why did you stop? And so it goes. You need endurance, because Jesus is returning soon to save you.
