Since the first promise given in Eden the people of God have waited for a 'better country', the 'kingdom of God'. The text shows the believers' inheritance is only 'in Christ'. But God also calls them his inheritance for they are 'the Bride of Christ'. Obtaining our inheritance is the result of God's purpose who works all things, so it is 'to the praise of his glory'. It is 'in Christ' and results from his death - the gospel may be compared to a last will and testament that requires the death of the person who made it. The believer shares Christ's inheritance. Paul mentions two groups of people - the believing Jews to whom Christ sent the gospel before anyone else would hear it; then he says, 'You also'. Strangers have come to share in it when they 'heard' the gospel of salvation and 'believed' it - a faith that involves accepting it as true, entrusting oneself to it, and living in obedience thereafter. And we want to be sure! The guarantee is the Holy Spirit's saving work in us. It is the unique characteristics of a child of God including faith, repentance, and the gradual appearance of the image of Christ - very different from the gifts the spirit also gives that do not change our character. These are the 'things that accompany salvation'. How important then that we do not 'grieve the Holy Spirit' who is our guarantee of what God has promised.
