King David is a type and picture of Christ our King. In 2 Samuel 5, David fights the Lord's battles by overcoming the Jebusites, a remnant of the Canaanites who opposed the Lordship of Yahweh. He takes the stronghold of Zion and establishes the city of David, Jerusalem. From this strategic place, he defends his kingdom from the Philistines. But not only does he fight the Lord's battles, he also builds the City of God, the center of the kingdom, the community of faith. Likewise, Christ our Savior overcame sin, death, and the devil to accomplish our salvation. All who believe in Him partake of His victory. Greater than David, Christ builds His church, strengthening every member with gifts and graces, while bringing many others to share in the glory of His kingdom. 2 Samuel 5 contains the first mention of "Zion" in the Bible.
As you prepare for worship read 2 Samuel 5. Meditate also on Hymn 425, "Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken" by John Newton. |
